Some of my writing featured in Plastic Water Magazine –

A piece I wrote about art and social change is featured in the recently released 3rd issue of Plastic Water, a “a monoculture killing e-zine available to all for free“ from Riverside, CA. The issue is full of poetry, interviews, photography and other work from artists in the area.

Patrick Sweeney “DO !T” 2009

My contribution to Ready or Not It’s 2010, a participatory public art project allowing “artists the chance to wrest curatorial control back from institutions empowered by years of exclusionary practices.”

“DO !T” utilizes an image from Greek riots protesting the police murder of 15 year old Alexandros Grigoropoulos and text similar to Nike’s famous “Just Do It” slogan. The piece celebrates do-it-yourself culture and urges viewers to take to the streets themselves, re-appropriating corporate cultural images for subversive ends and confronting privatization through piracy, direct action, and communalism.

The Nation on the UC

I’m quoted in a really comprehensive article in The Nation about the recent actions in defense of public education by University of California students.

“Most of the students I spoke with understood that something more than money was at stake. Many, said UC Riverside undergraduate Patrick Sweeney, had never been involved in campus politics before. Much of the cross-campus organizing was done not by the usual campus activists but through the relatively staid University of California Students Association. Student government endorsed the protests, as did faculty and staff unions, which helped arrange buses to carry protesters to UCLA. At Berkeley, students and staff staged a two-day solidarity strike. “This is something that affects all students,” Sweeney said. “People realized that they needed to step up.” – Ben Ehrenreich, The Nation

Child Leader Project

I want to give a quick shout-out to a project several of my friends are working on, the Child Leader Project.

They’re doing wonderful things with micro finance, education, and social justice in both India and California.

I designed that logo and a few other images for them, and they can use any skills or talents you have to offer! They need some help obtaining their non-profit status, so please contact them if you are able to help!
